spiritual direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

As a church practicing the way of Jesus together, we believe we grow best with God, within the local church, and with the help of a trusted spiritual companion (spiritual director).

Spiritual direction is a gracious, prayerful, and confidential conversation—one-on-one or in a small group. Rooted in Scripture and practiced across the Church for centuries, it supports the spiritual formation of believers as we learn to notice God’s presence and discern the Holy Spirit’s movement in daily life. A trained director accompanies you in this process, trusting the Holy Spirit to be the true Director.

Purpose
To grow closer to God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—by noticing His presence and guidance in everyday life, and to be steadily transformed into Christlikeness.

What is it like?

• One-on-one or small group meetings; occasional retreats
• Unhurried listening with Scripture, prayer, and shared silence
• Gentle, open-ended questions that help you notice God’s work in daily life
• Cultivating your inner life through different spiritual practices (e.g., Lectio Divina, silence and solitude, Sabbath rhythms, fasting, journaling, service, etc.)
• Not counseling or problem-solving; not about performance or achievements—this is about being with God and following His lead

Over time, you’ll learn to meet God in ordinary places—emotions, desires, relationships, and events—and move from only doing for God to being with God.

What we aim to offer

We’ll provide brief, introductory teaching on Christian spiritual formation, but our emphasis is practice—experiencing spiritual direction and learning by doing.
• One-on-One Spiritual Direction (by appointment, in person or online)
• Small-Group Spiritual Direction (periodic cohorts)
• Guided Spiritual Experiences:
- Micro-Retreat (2–3 hours, weeknight)
- Half-Day Retreat (4–6 hours, Saturday)
- Night Vigil (9:00 pm–12:30 am)
- 24-Hour Overnight (Fri 6:00 pm–Sat 6:00 pm)

Who leads the Spiritual Direction Ministry at Woodmark Church

Spiritual Direction at Woodmark is led, developed, and offered by Alexander Negrov (elder) together with other church ministers. In keeping with best practice, every spiritual director at Woodmark receives ongoing spiritual direction.
As we launch this ministry, Dr. Negrov will be assisted by Tanya Korets. Both are formally trained through different programs as Spiritual Directors, giving Woodmark a credible, trained core from which to launch.
